Aimpoint 3XMag And Micro T-1
Over the last 35 years Aimpoint has become synonymous with high quality red dot optics. When the US Army wanted a red dot sight, there was really only one choice - the Aimpoint CompM2, which they type classified as the M68 CCO. This sight added a whole new dimension of effectiveness to US Army CQB tactics and pushed up marksmanship scores. After a few years the US Army looked to replace its M68s with a sight that combined the best features of the CompM2 with some desired changes. The first thing to go was the rare and expensive N cell battery, replaced by the much more common AA. Secondly, they wanted a sight that didn't mount in a ring where it could rotate with respect to the weapon, throwing shots off target. Lastly they wanted a tougher brightness adjuster switch. In the meantime, Aimpoint had rolled out its vasty improved ACET battery life enhancing circuitry technology, meaning they could not only provide a sight, the CompM4S, that met the US Army's needs, but could provide one that could wring 8 years of continuous use out of one AA lithium battery! The resulting CompM4 had a high battery and adjuster housing that was great for use with thick gloves, but which was somewhat vulnerable. The US Army specified a low mounted battery housing for a replacement, the CompM4S, of which they promptly ordered over 500,000 as their new M68 CCO.
However, there was one important aspect of the Comp that could still be improved - it's weight. The Army had started to cut out pounds from the soldiers' burden, but things had gotten so critical that now even ounces mattered. Afghanistan was a new type of war fought on foot, in rarefield air, up and down mountains, with problematic resupply meaning that consumables like ammo, batteries and water would be critical. As a result, US Army soldiers increasingly started to purchase their own Aimpoint Micro T-1 red dot sights. At 3.7 ounces inclusive of thumbscrew operated Picatinny rail mount, and incredibly rugged, the Aimpoint Micro T-1 was the ideal choice. The LaRue LT660 is often substitued for the factory mount and puts the sight at the correct height for Night Vision systems and co-witnessing
Recent photographs from Afghanistan show the Aimpoint Micro T-1 in un use with the Aimpoint 3xMag magnifier on the unique Aimpoint TwistMount, sometimes with the optional TwistMount Co-witnessing Spacer which puts the Aimpoint magnifier at the correct height for the Micro T1 when used with the LT660 quick release mount. Although the 4 MOA (actually 3.8 MOA) red dot can be a bit of a disadvantage at longer ranges, this combination saves a lot of weight over the combination of a CompM4 and an M150 ACOG. Although some ACOGs now boast piggy-backed Docter or RMR rearsights, the Aimpoint combination has the advantage that the red dot sight is visible through in-line night vision in a combination that is easily co-witnessed. The T-1 is also increasingly in use as a secondary sight on weapons primarily equipped with high magnification optics. The added security of rapid close range engagment is vital to snipers and designated marksman. An offset mount means they can cant the rifle over to 45 degrees, squeeze off the shot and then immediately engage another more distant target with their scope. It seems almost certain that both the Aimpoint Micro T1 and their 3xMag magnifier will be standardized by the US military within the next couple of years.
