Exmoors Birds of Prey by Kathy Rustell
Exmoor has long been known as a paradise for watchers of the amazing local birds of prey. These fantastic creatures soar at unimaginable heights and stalk their prey from such a distance and attack with such precision that they rarely go wrong. The open moor is a successful breeding and feeding ground for birds of prey. Small mammals are a common target being spotted from above, unknowingly going about their business. Rare birds are sometimes seen such as Merlins as well as more common Sparrow Hawks and numerous others.
The moors have a good population of breeding Falcons as well as captive breeding falconry programmes. These magnificent creatures are frequently seen and the fastest creature in the world the Peregrine Falcon has also been spotted. The Peregrine Falcon can soar at speeds of up to 200-mph and kills smaller birds for its food. They raise their young on cliff edges so they can teach them their aerial acrobatic skills from a young age. These birds are at threat from over use of pesticides and farmers as well as smaller bird keepers who view the Falcon as a threat to their lively hood.
Along the coast of Exmoor you may find Hawks flying, feeding or raising their young. Through amazing bird IQ tests related to feeding habits the Hawk was named as one of the most intelligent birds. Their vision is phenomenal and ability to hunt is precise. The Sparrow Hawks are known to hunt tits, sparrows and thrushes but are capable of killing a bird of much larger size
Another bird of prey seen throughout the moors is the Buzzard. The common Buzzard and rough legged Buzzard have been spotted and recorded. Buzzards are the most common bird of prey in the UK but also one of the most at threat, these threats come from deliberate poisonings and other land related issues. Their favourite habitats include farmland and woodland and their choice food is small mammals and birds
The Kestrel is another of Exmoors famous residents of the sky. They favour Exmoors mixture of woodland and open land but can also survive in urban dwellings. The reason they can survive in towns and cities is because they have to, their natural habitat is constantly shrinking due to intensive farming methods.
Exmoor on a clear day is a bird watchers dream, pair of binoculars and identification book are a key for enthusiasts but pure appreciation and respect is the key to watch these spectacular birds at work.
