Stocking Options For The Short Action 700
One of the most effective upgrades for the Remington 700, after a new or ugraded trigger and bedding job is a complete new stock. Such stocks are available from a wide range of manufacturers all of which have different approaches. You can go for anything from a traditional style stock, albeit with a modern V or pillar bedding system and advanced composite materials right up to a complete chassis system that will turn your Remington 700 into a state of the art sniper rifle or the ergonomic equivalent of an AR10. HS Precision have built up a great reputation for their stocks, one of which was chosen of the US Army M24 sniper rifle. Their stocks tend to follow tradional profiles with sleek, smooth lines. Their use of composite materials keeps their stocks amazingly light yet incredibly strong. The Remington 700 Police stock is the stock chosen by Remington for the Police model of their short action 700. It comes in at only 2lb 12 oz and provides a solid, repeatable bedding from its machined aluminum bedding block. You can supplement this with a glass bedding job if you wish, but it is not necessary for great accuracy. This stock is available in black and tan and takes paint and other exterior finishes extremely well. The next step up is to opt for a chassis system.
The Accuracy International AICS offers the ergonomics of their renowned L96 and L115 British Army sniper rifles in a package that can take the Remington 700 short or long action rifle in fixed and folding stock models. This stock is basically a machined billet of aluminum (or two in the case of the folding model) to which the Remington action torqued down into self-centering bedding. Glass reinforced plastic panels in either black, olive green or tan are then bolted on to this to give the chassis system its distinctive slab-sided profile. This system was state of the art a few years ago, but it doesn't offer additional optics or accessories mounting options that many shooters now want.
One of the latest chassis systems on offer for the Remington 700 is the MDT TAC21. The TAC21 is built around the concept of giving the Remington 700 AR type ergonomics. This cleverly designed unit encases the Remington 700 in what appears to be an AR upper and lower. This takes the full range of AR accessories including pistol grips and stocks. The Picatinny rail on top of the receiver has a 20 MoA slope built in optimized for long range shooting, whilst the section above the barrel is parallel with it. The fore end is predrilled to accept MagPul rail sections to further enhance accessory mounting options. You end up with a Remington 700 that in most respects handles just like an AR10.
