How Reflex Sights Work
The optical collimator makes the reflex sight possible. Collimators align rays of light from a source in parallel. Refractive and reflective collimators are employed. The collimator takes the image of the reticle illuminated by a radioactive or fiber-optic light source or an LED and projects it to infinity. This image is directed onto a dichroic mirror or beam splitter which uses a special reflective coating so as to reflect only the precise colour of the reticle whilst allowing all other colours to pass through. This enables the shooter to see the reticle in the distance in an otherwise perfect image from which only the exact wavelength of the reticle has been removed.
Holographic reflex sights use a laser hologram to project the image of the reticle into the target plane. A great benefit of this is that the entire aiming pattern image is effectively optically centred - not just its middle. It also makes the sight less sensitive to eye position relative to the sight, allowing for more variety in shooting position. It also means partial obscuration of the aiming window will not prevent the firer seeing the aiming pattern in its entirety. The main drawback of the holographic sight is its laser diode's greater power consumption than an LED - battery lives being measured in hundreds rather than tens of thousands of hours.
The position of the collimator dictates the configuration of the sight. If it is mounted underneath you can have a unit that is less bulky, with the sighting screen taking the form of a mini head up display. This configuration can have the disadvantage of putting the sight line way above the bore - this suits AR15 rifles or others with a straight-through stock configuration, but is disadvantageous with other configurations. It can also result in a less robust sight as the protruding display can be vulnerable. Side mounted collimators enable a tube to be used to contain the workings of the sight. Tubes are inherently immensely strong and result in immensely robust sights with adjusters that can be switched from right to left hand operation by simply rotating the sight in itsĀ mount.
Reflex or red dot sights are usually non magnifying - this enables them to be used with both eyes open for very fast target acquisition and engagement. This is best accomplished with a red dot or circle reticle, the dot size being a trade-off between fast acquisition (larger dot better) and precision (smaller dot better). However, magnifying red dot sights exist which take advantage of reflex operation to combine a large illuminated aiming point for fast target engagement with a traditional ballistically calibrated ladder reticle for long range precision. A bright illuminated aiming mark is used for close ranged shooting, with a traditional reticle for longer ranged engagements. This philosophy is exemplified by the Trijicon Acog, adopted as standard across the US armed forces. However 1x magnification or 'unitary' reflex sights can often be fitted with detachable or flip to side magnifiers to provide a very versatile combination. The ubiquitous ACOG can attain similar versatility with the mounting of peep battlesights and/or a small rear mounted red dot sight on their housings.
It is almost universal for reflex sights to use internal adjustment. The sight is mounted rigidly to the weapon and the optics move internally to move the point of impact. The adjustments are calibrated and almost always take the form of audible or tactile clicks. The calibrations vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to model. The fly fishing tackle (the latest US Army M68) for example employs clicks that are 16mm at 100 meters or 1/2" at 80 yards whilst the USMC's AN/PVQ-31B / TA31RCO has clicks that move the point of impact 0.33" at 100 yards.
Amost all red dots sights feature variable brightness levels for the reticle. This is particularly important in those sights intended for use with Night Vision. Adjustment is accomplished automatically in some models, either electronically or by the amount of light the fiber-optic light gatherer can take in from the environment. The latter system can cause problems when shooting into a brightly lit area from a dark one. A polarising filter can be used on some models to reduce the brightness of the image - rotating two polarised lenses can graduate the image from complete brightness to complete black-out. As the dichroic mirror or beam splitter is itself sometimes polarised, fitting one such filter can have a similar effect. In the past this caused problems with protective eyewear which was also polarised, but the leading manufacturers now use polarities chosen so as not to obscure the target when used with polarised glasses.
It has become commonplace for shooters to 'co-witness' their iron sights with their non magnifying red dot sight. It is not necessary to align the red dot to sit on top of the foresight or anywhere else - it only matters that both systems are zeroed on the target. A popular method is to have the iron sights in the bottom 1:3 of the sight picture and manufacturers like Eotech are starting to make sights with optional risers to permit this; for example their 557.AR223.
