Optical Sights In The USMC And US Army
When the US Army concluded that iron sights had had their day they first went to a unitary powered solution. The reflex sight offered a low risk solution which would only increase soldiers capability in the close-in fight. Analysis after the Korean war focused the US Army's attention on short range engagements at which they sought to achieve incapacitation by using large numbers of projectiles to compensate for aiming errors - a philosophy evidenced in the SALVO and SPIW projects. From 1973 to 1993, US Army doctrine was designed to face an enemy that would dismount from armoured vehicles at 300 meters from its objectives. The US Army saw no need to replace the 300/500 meter, non windage adjustable backsight as it served this doctrine well. They replaced the M16A2 with the M4 carbine, giving up some lethality for a more handy package..
The kinds of wars US forces are fighting in now could hardly be more different from those anticipated in the 1980s and the emphasis now is on light infantry, correct target identification and precise engagement with minimum force. The result was a renewed interest in long Range Rifle shooting which demanded maginifying optical sights. The USMC adopted the flat-topped M16A4 rifle as its standard shoulder arm, but replaced almost all of its M9 sidearms with M4 carbines instead for a quantum leap in capability. The venerable M14 rifle reappeared in large numbers, some of them reconfigured as Enhanced Battle Rifles. The Army has also bought M16A4s in some numbers.
The Army first adopted the Aimpoint CompM2 as its M68 close combat optic. Aimpoint's CompM2 is a very rugged 2 MoA red dot unit with no range compensation. The M68 attaches to the rifle via a single ring 30 mm scope mount. The CompM2 served the US Army well for the best part of a decade, but, in 2009, the Army were looking to replace their inventory which had seen a lot of combat with an improved sight. This time they went for the Aimpoint CompM4S, a CompM4 with its battery housing and brightness adjuster moved to a more protected lower position. The CompM4s also brought in a tougher adjuster knob and has a mount that prevents rotation induced cant of the weapon. Battery life in this variant has reached a staggering 80,000 hours of continuous operation on a day setting! One battery could well last the lifetime of the sight. Foot-borne operations in the mountains of Afghanistan put the emphasis on weight saving. To try to get its soldiers burden reduced the US Army has issued a quanitity of the tiny (3.7 ounce with mount!) Aimpoint T-1 4 MoA red dot sight with the 3XMag detachable magnifier in Afghanistan. Although a vast number of CompM4S have been purchased it looks increasingly likely that they will be replaced with Micro T-1s. The US Army went with a 3.8X ELCAN, the M145 for its machineguns.
The Marines had never lost their religious fervour for accurate rifle fire and longer ranged engagements, despite being forced to adopt the earlier slow twist, light barrel M16. Long range rifle traditionalists pushed hard for the adoption of a heavy barrel for the M16 with an 800 meter target backsight. This was strictly symbolic as you would be hard pressed to see, let alone hit an enemy soldier in the real world at 600, let alone 800 meters. The Marines are still (as of 2010) without a standard issue close combat sight. Instead, after trialling a TA31 ACOG, they adopted two TA31 variants with reticles tailored to the M16A4 rifle and the M4 carbine respectively as their Rifle Combat Optic or RCO. These are designated the AN/PVQ-31A and AN/PVQ-31B. The M150 is the US Army version of the TA31RCO, also ballistically matched to the 20" barrelled M16A4. To give short range performance, this 4X32 sight is being topped with an L3 Miniature Reflex Sight in an arrangement that mirrors that already used for Docter and Trijicon RMR sights on some ACOGs. The US Marines went with TA-11 3.5X35 ACOGs in lieu of the ELCAN for its squad and platoon MGs.
