Find Peace on a North Georgia Trail by Scott Thompson
North Georgia is a hikers dream. Whether you are from the South or from some place far away you will find peace in the North Georgia Mountains. With the famous Appalachian Trail starting in North Georgia at Springer Mountain and ending in Maine Georgia gets thousands of thru-hikers each year. Some begin in Georgia and some end but all get treated with warmth and hospitality that the Southern mountains are known for. There are plenty of Georgia hikes you will love.
On the A.T. in Georgia are several fun stops, one being the top of Blood Mountain. This bald mountain, with its large rock outcroppings, provides miles of views. If you are an early riser get up early and hike to the top for a beautiful sunset. Or better yet, camp out overnight and awake to the sun. There's even an old cabin at the top that you can use for free, but you better get there early because it fills up fast on weekends.
Another fun spot on the Appalachian Trail is the Walysi-Yi Inn located at Neil's Gap a few miles from Blood Mountain. In fact, both Blood and the inn are great complements to each other for one trip. In the inn you will find camping and hiking supplies, tourist swag like t-shirts, outdoor books, and a knowledgeable staff that can't be beat. If you are in North Georgia make sure you buy something from the inn to help support this small business.
Even though the A.T. is a favorite destination there are other fun trails in North Georgia as well like the Benton MacKaye Trail. This trail is styled after the A.T. and runs for 300 miles from Springer Mountain to the Smokies. It is named after the founder of the Appalachian Trail and is a treat for those that love hiking but don't like the crowds that are often found on the A.T.
If you want an easy hike that also happens to be near the tourist trap town of Helen, Georgia you will love the Raven Cliffs Trail. This two and a half mile trail ends at a set of glorious waterfalls that cascade through the cracks in a large granite wall. The trail is suffering from overuse so tread lightly. There is now managed parking area with restrooms at the foot of the trail. You'll have to bring a couple of dollars to park. Make sure to pick up after yourself, and others, and stay on the trail.
The North Georgia Mountains are filled with outdoor opportunities. It would take a lifetime to hike every trail. The trails listed in this article are the most popular but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try other trails you find as well.
